because we all love a good survey

Run/workout in the heat and humidity or freezing temps and snow?

Heat for sure! I’m a Southern California girl so me and cold weather don’t really mix. When it’s cold, I would much rather lay on the couch wrapped up in my blanket. Facing cold weather does not sound appealing. But make it hot and I’m in! I love getting extra sweaty too. True story.

Have washboard abs or flat abs?

Whatever happens, happens. I don’t really care either way. Whichever one allows me to eat unlimited frozen yogurt would be ideal 😉

Dr. Oz or The Doctors?

I CANNOT stand Dr. Oz! There’s just something about him. Probably the fact that he is always talking about fad diets. Blah. Makes me sick. Then again The Doctors are pretty annoying too. But I’d probably prefer them to Dr. Whats-His-Face.

Jillian Michaels or Bob Harper?

Jillian Michaels. No questions.

Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream?

Frozen yogurt! Even though I have recently (re)learned that ice cream is quite delicious.

To train: Upper body or Lower body?

Oh snap. Both? I love leg days at the gym, then again I love chest days. Gosh darn questions.

Protein powder or food with protein?

Food with protein of course! Protein powder is good in a hurry or when I don’t have other sources of protein but REAL food is where it’s at. More specifically, eggs, chicken, and greek yogurt.

Lunges or squats?

Squats squats squats! Not a fan of lunges. At all.

Sweet or salty?

Uhh…both once again. One of my favorite foods is chocolate covered pretzels and that’s both sweet and salty sooooooo. Yeah 🙂

Workout attire: cute or comfy?

Who workouts and looks cute? Oh yeah, those annoying people. That’s who. I’m all about comfort. That means no make up, hair up, running short, a cotton shirt, and shoes.

Body Pump or Heavy lifting?

Heavy lifting. I tried Body Pump once and liked it, but I’m still all about the heavy lifting.

Yoga or Pilates?

Neither. I have the attention span of a goldfish. Ooh look. Puppy!

Nike or Adidas?

Nike! Let me explain this one. I used to LOVE Adidas. Not just love. But, LOVE. Everything I wore had to be Adidas. I would shudder at the thought of wearing Nikes. (I was a weird kid.) I even named my cat after Adidas. But we call her Adi. And my email address, which I made in 7th grade, is adidasqueen1000. Well thankfully I grew up and moved onto Nike and I haven’t looked back since. You can’t go wrong with the Free Runs and Tempo Shorts.

Running on the treadmill or outdoors?

Outdoors fo sho. Then again, I’d take either at this point if it gave me motivation to run.

gosh darn farrah and her crying...

gosh darn farrah and her crying…

Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s?

As much as I loveeee Whole Foods, I gotta go with Trader Joes on this one. The prices are great and I love the products.

Summer or Winter Olympics?

Summer! Holla! Sorry winter. I don’t even know when you’re on TV.

Exercises classes or Exercise videos?

I’m pretty sure I’m the only one to say this, but videos. For some reason, classes make me so mad. I get annoyed easily so the other people in the class tend to annoy me. But when I’m watching a video, it’s just me, myself, and I. Then again, that can get pretty annoying at times too

Steamed veggies or roasted veggies?

Roasted. Hands down. They make veggies taste like candy. Candayyyyyy!

Hot or cold weather?
Outside or treadmill?
Whole Foods or Trader Joes?
Steamed or roasted veggies?
And lastly, is anybody else annoyed by Farrah’s crying face??

thanks, movies, advice, and uhhh…other random schtuff

1. First things first. THANK YOU! You are all so amazing, as usual. Your response to my last post blew me away. You are all so supportive and I can’t even begin to say how blessed to have you all as ‘friends.’ So thank you times a million!

2. I went to the movies twice this week. Say wha?! This girl rarely goes to the movies because a) it’s too darn expensive and b) I have the patience of a 5 year old so I can’t sit still for very long. I saw Savages and thought it was okay. I was mainly excited to see it because they filmed down in Laguna Beach so it was fun recognizing the different places they went. One of the spots was even where I took Homecoming dance pictures! The next movie I saw was The Watch. I thought it was really funny. Not exactly what I expected, but funny nonetheless.

3. So I mentioned the guy I went out on a date(s) with before. Well, if you’re friends with me on facebook, then you would have seen that we made it FBO (facebook official). After making it official, my dad came storming into my room the next morning and said, “Time to get up. You’re changing your facebook right now.” So yeah, he was mad to say the least. I went ahead and changed it just to make him happy but that obviously isn’t stopping me from being with the guy. The boyfriend is pre-deployed right now but will be back in a couple of weeks. We keep in touch on a daily basis and he even sent me flowers, a teddy bear, and chocolate the other day. Too precious.

3. Speaking of the boyfriend, I’m looking to get him a gift before he heads off to Afghanistan. I will see him in September because he is visiting his family in Texas, so that’s a good thing. But I am SO stuck on what to get him! I want to get him something to remember/think of me, but then again, when I told my friend about one of my ideas, she told me that she doesn’t want me to get in too deep. Well, it’s too late. Then again, I see where she’s coming from. My idea was to get him this bracelet and put the latitude/longitude of where I will be in Texas. Then I will get a matching bracelet with the latitude/longitude of Afghanistan. I know, corny. But I don’t know! Any ideas are happily welcomed 🙂

4. I have found the best drink at Starbucks. Okay, ready for this?
-Mocha Light
-Nonfat or Soy Milk
-2 scoops of protein powder
-Peppermint syrup (if you’re feeling extra frisky)

If you get this in venti, like muah, it costs a whopping 6 bucks. But if your parents are loyal Starbucks customers and get the free drink certificate in the mail, then it’s free! Take that Starbucks.

5. Speaking of running. Oh…we weren’t talking about running? Well we are now. I haven’t run in about…a week. Maybe 2 weeks. Oops. I think my Garmin is mad at me for it because it won’t turn on now. I’ve tried plugging it into my computer but nope. It’s decided to be all pissy and not work. Not cool. Not cool.

6. Song of the week:

7. I don’t work tomorrow! And guess what I’m going to do…write an essay. That’s not very exciting, is it? No, no it’s not.

Well this post was all over the place. My bad! It’s currently late and I’m still a bit dazed from that 20 miler I did today. Jk look at #5.

Through the years

I’ve come a long way since high school, since starting this blog, since just a few months ago. I’m a a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. If it weren’t for my past history with the eating disorder and depression, I wouldn’t be who I am today. And I love who I am. It didn’t always be like that, but I can look back on my life thus far and be proud of who I have grown up to be. Let’s rewind a little, shall we?

I was heading into my senior year of high school. It was actually a pretty stressful time because I was playing club basketball (which I hated with a passion) and had my high school basketball team summer practices. I was still trying to be seen by college coaches, in hopes to get a scholarship. By this point in the summer, I wasn’t purging very much, only restricting. My food journal never left my side and numbers were constantly flying through my head. I was exercising about 4 hours a day, between club and high school practices. On top of that, we would have tournaments on the weekends, some of which included traveling to San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Oregon. I remember crying on my way to those club practices. I absolutely dreaded it. High school practices were actually fun and I didn’t mind those. My social life was at a major low. All my time was spent working out, sleeping, or restricting my eating. Definitely not the way my last high school summer should have been spent.

By this point, I have my basketball scholarship. So in a way, that should have taken a load off of my shoulders. But nope! I was even more stressed out about being in shape and being good enough for the college team. We were given a workout plan to follow 6 days a week. I also had a job for the beginning of summer so between 8 hour shifts and working out, I had zero time to do anything besides sleep. I was hating life and my body couldn’t take it anymore so I quit the job. My eating disorder was doing somewhat better at this point. I was still seeing my therapist and nutritionist so that helped. But during this summer, I also had some run ins with depression. This brings in the medication.

This would put us at October 2011. The first month of school was amazing. I was meeting a lot of people and having the time of my life. But slowly, things began to sink in. Between school, basketball, and trying to have a social life, my mood was taking a turn for the worst. One day after practice, I had enough. I was balling my eyes out and talking to my mom on the phone when I said something that no mother wants to hear. I said, “Don’t be surprised if I’m found dead in my room.” I still can’t believe I said such a horrible thing but I was at such a low point, I just wanted it all to end. As soon as I said those words, my parents were looking up flights for me to come home. I spent the next week at home going back and forth between therapy appointments until I finally made one of the best decisions of my life: I quit basketball. Sure, I was a bit sad about it. Basketball was in my life for 9 years. But at the same time, I had to do what was best for me.

6 months…
Life at this point is going okay. It’s February and I made it through my first semester of college but I’m still not happy with how things are going. My medication has changed so I’m still adjusting to that and I lost a lot of friends due to my earlier bouts of depression and isolation. Bulimia and restriction come back in every once in awhile but not like it controlled my life before.

4 months…
This was a horrible, horrible time in my life. I was at an all time low. Between school and my general feeling of hopelessness, I just wanted it all to end. The eating disorder was becoming stronger and my depression was taking a hold of me. I remember one day in particular. It was a Saturday, campus was empty as usual, and I was feeling so lonely and like there was no point to life anymore. I was laying in my bed, crying, when I grabbed the bottle of pills from my drawer. I spent the next 30 minutes holding that bottle, just laying there, so many thoughts going through my head. Finally, I got up, went to the bathroom, and flushed those pills down the toilet. It wasn’t worth it.

3 months…
I made the decision to transfer schools so things are looking up. I no longer have to spend the next few years of my life at that horrible place. I can move on to bigger and better things. I traveled around, looking at possible schools to attend. As soon as my feet touched Texas soil, I fell in love. Nothing else compared to how at home I felt being there. I felt at peace with my decision of where my future was headed.

Pure and utter happiness. My relationships have never been better, I have never smiled so much, and for once in my life, I’m not stressing about what will happen tomorrow. I’m living my life like any 19 year old should: care-free, happy, and (sort of) stress free. I have eaten foods that I used to refuse to eat, I’m going out and hanging out with friends, and most importantly, I feel a reason to live. I’m sure there will be stressors in the near future, considering I leave for Texas in 19 days, but I’m not worrying about that now. For now, I’m enjoying my life, one day at a time. I’ve been through my ups and my downs but at the end of the day, I know I can make it through whatever comes my way.

Side note: I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for your continued support. You have been with me through the good times and the bad and I can’t even begin to explain how much that means to me. So thank you thank you thank youuuu!

WIAW + more shopping shenanigans

Long time no talk! I hope you all had an amazing weekend. I just finished got home from work and now I’m watching Tosh.O. No shame, no shame. First off, WIAW.

Nothing new on the fitness front. Same ‘ol, same ‘ol. But I did use the ab roller yesterday at the gym and now I’m soreeeee. I want an ab roller. Now. Now. Now.

Peaches and chocolate mind protein powder. With my cat chillaxin’ in the back.

New flavor of kombucha. The verdict: Ehhh. I’ll stick to GT’s.

Peanut butter, banana, and caramel pain perdu. One of the best things I’ve ever eaten!

Gotta love the classics. Trader Joes O’s, blueberries, and almond milk.

Salad with carrots, onion, bell pepper, chicken, and a peanut vinaigrette.

Pumpkin protein pancakes with vanilla frozen yogurt on top. Yep. Frozen yogurt. It’s never too early for some fro yo (words to live by).

Last time, I showed ya’ll some clothes I got but I didn’t tell you where I got it from. How dare I. Let me redeem myself.

This white lacey tank and dress is from Irene’s Story. This is a new store at the mall and I LOVE it! So much cute clothes for not too expensive. Win win.

These shirts and bandeau are from Forever 21. I really feel like this store is hit or miss. The one near me is two stories and it takes everything I have to not fall to the floor from being so overwhelmed.

So that’s what I got last time but I went shopping once again. It was Nordstroms semi-annual sale. My mom, sister, and I hit the mall early on Saturday to get some good dealios.

Got this tank at Lamb and Flag for cheap. The store is closing so everything was 75%. Bad for them, good for me.

Black maxi skirt from Irene’s Story

Shirt from Ebay for the Toby Keith concert!

Shorts from Nordstrom. I’m normally not a shorts person but these will be perfect with my cowboy boots. Yeeeehaw.

Shirt from Nordstrom. It’s super comfy too!

  • In other fun news, I never said how the date went! Well, everyone, it was amazing. The guy was a complete gentleman and we had a lot in common. He’s actually from Texas and is in the marines. He got pre-deployed last week so we have been trying to stay in touch. After this pre-deploynment, he’ll be back for a couple of days and then I leave for Texas. Then he gets deployed. So we’ll see where things go!
  • Speaking of Texas, t-minus 22 days until I leave.
  • I got my cartilage pierced! I got it done on Friday night without my parents knowing. Turns out, they weren’t that mad.
  • In other fun news, I am loving life right now. My relationships with my friends haven’t been better and I truly feel happy. I go to bed at night happy. Happy with the decisions I made, choices I made, and the way I acted. I don’t know how long this will last, but I am loving it.

Do you use the ab roller?
Where’s your favorite store to shop at?
Have you ever done something behind your parents back?

Shop till you drop. Or just eat french fries.

So remember when I told you I was going to show you the clothes I bought from shopping? Yeah, me either, because, you know, that was like 2 weeks ago. I’m a bit behind. Obvi. Does it bother you when people say obvi? Oh well. YOLO. Oops. I did it again.

Anywho. My sister and I went to the mall awhile ago to look for a birthday present for my mom. There wasn’t much luck for my mom but I sure hit the jackpot!

All for under $100! That’s a good deal in my book…

In food news, I went on a date (oh em gee) today. It’s a different guy than who I mentioned before. (I know. I’m a playa.) But anyways, we went to a Ruby’s for lunch and I had no idea what I would get. I didn’t want to get a veggie burger because I didn’t want to make it awkward. And I definitely wasn’t about to get a salad…didn’t want to be one of “those” girls. So what did I get??

A grilled cheese and french fries. Oh yeah! Truck yeah! (Bonus points to anybody who knows what Truck yeah is from.)

Let’s break this down, shall we?
Bread – It was an egg bread so there were eggs (duhh) and flour. Most likely, white flour.
Cheese – Good ‘ol fashioned American cheese. That stuff that comes in the little plastic sheet things. Yeah. That stuff.
French fries – Double whammy on this one. White potatoes AND fried. Oh snap.

But you know what, this meal was delicious. I don’t care that there wasn’t a vegetable in sight. I don’t care that it was greasy. I don’t care what chemicals could have possibly been in the food. What I did care about was having fun and enjoying the time with the person I was with. Success! #EatClean. #EatSomeDamnGoodFrenchFries
And lastly, I just wanted to give a special shout out to Jesus for making sure the fire extinguisher at my gym works. Safety first. Amen.

What do you order on a first date?
Have you gone shopping lately? Gotten anything good??

WIAW + Boy Meets World

Happy WIAW! Hope you are all having a fabulous week so far. I was looking at the calendar and I can’t believe that summer is almost over. Less than a month! Oh where has the time gone…

I’ve still been lifting weights and doing Insanity but I’ve also been incorporating some track work here and there. Totally depends on my mood for the day. Actually, I didn’t work out all weekend. I was super busy and it felt really nice not worry about getting a workout in. I just lived my life! Today, I headed to the gym and did some chest/tricep work and then sweat up a storm on the stairmaster. After that, I went on a walk with my friend and her dog.

Bananas topped with pb and chocolate syrup

Chocolate Mint Muscle Milk protein powder. This stuff is so dang good! Even mixed with water it tastes good. I wasn’t sure if I should buy it, but thankfully Kate helped me decide 😉
One of my favorite snacks as of recently: toast broiled with butter and sugar and topped with cinnamon. The sugar gets all bubbly and delcioussss.

Greek yogurt with chocolate Amazing Grass, strawberries, and dark chocolate chips

Crackers, tempeh bacon, and string cheese

Banzai Bowl enjoyed at the beach: berry smoothie topped with granola, strawberries, banana, goji berries, and honey

White bean and kale soup and a lemongrass ginger kombucha

Just about every flavor of frozen yogurt with almonds and dark chocolate

Food from work. I got the Rockin’ Moroccan which is quinoa, grilled veggies, tofu (but I subbed in tempeh), and a moroccan sauce.

Pre-workout snack: toast with butter.

Amazingggg pizza. Mushrooms, braised leeks, truffle oil, and some sort of cheese.

So as you can see, I’ve still been enjoying cheese and butter. I haven’t had ice cream in awhile but I think I’m getting some tonight!

I was on Pinterest the other day and randomly decided to type in Boy Meets World because I was avoiding homework feeling nostalgic. Man, that show was good!

Any Boy Meets World Fans??
What’s your favorite flavor of protein powder?

My best buds, Tim and Kenny

Soooo my sister and I got the best surprise ever from our dad…

He got us Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw tickets for their Brothers of the Sun Tour!!!!!!!! This was the day before the concert so I had all day on Friday to be giddy.

The concert started at 4:30pm at Angels Stadium on Saturday so I pulled on my boots and headed out.

The first opening act was Jake Owen. I love me some Jake. My favorite part was probably the fact that he was barefoot and wearing blue jeans (and one of his songs is Barefoot Blue Jean Night). He sounded amazingggg! Of course.

Next up was Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. We took this as a time to visit my aunt and uncle who were also at the concert, just a different section. We also got some drinks!

Wait…is that a beer in my hand? Well, sort of. It’s a non-alcoholic beer and it wasn’t too bad. I know I wrote a post awhile ago about why I would never drink but to be honest, I’m reconsidering it. Heck, I’ve been reconsidering a lot of things in my life. I have let go and relaxed so much these past couple months.

But anywho, back to the concert!  When we got back to our seats, I pulled out my candy and enjoyed people watching. (P.S. Big Hunks=one of the best candies evaaa.)

After Grace Potter, it was Tim McGraw time…

Then it was time for Kenny Chesney…

Then Kenny + Tim…

And since I’ve been obsessed with Come Over by Kenny Chesney…

Overall, the concert was beyond amazing! Not only were the performers good, but so was the company. Everybody was so nice and was there to just have a good time. Definitely one of the funnest nights I’ve had. Plus, it felt good to let loose and not give a damn (excuse my language).

What’s the best concert you’ve been to?

Because we can always use some good music.

First off, thank you all SO much for your support on my last post. Every comment I received seriously made my day. I can’t even begin to say how much you all mean to me. You are amazing!

I have been finding downloading a bunch of new songs lately and I figured, Hey! Want not share it with some of my fav peeps (you all)!

What’s your favorite songs at the moment?

Well, I did it…

I’ve talked about fear foods before, and most all of them contain fats. Avocados, nuts, nut butters, coconut, oil, butter, ice cream, cheese, etc.

-Avocados (Eaten on a daily basis)
-Nuts (I flippin’ love me a handful of walnuts)
-Nut Butters (Peanut butter=my life)
-Coconut (Love adding this to fro yo)
-Oil (Always roast my veggies with it)

Now onto the last three: butter, ice cream, and cheese. All dairy products with fat. They scare the s*#@ out of me, to be quite honest. But I did something I never thought I would do…I ate those foods.

We went to dinner at Whole Foods one night and of course, we did some shopping afterwards. I usually buy Earth Balance coconut spread for my butter but then I saw this Organic Valley butter. My eyes drifted to the bakery case and I saw a cranberry pecan roll. The butter went into my cart, followed by the roll. Later on, I ate that roll AND the butter. And let me tell you something, it was delicious. Delicious, as in, butter is too good not to pass up on a freshly baked roll. Delicious, as in, butter isn’t gonna kill me so bring it on.

Ice Cream
Three Twins Ice Cream was on sale at Whole Foods so my mom got the Mint Confetti flavor. When we got home, I tried a spoonful and man oh man. It was awesome. So I grabbed a bowl, and said, “Eff you ED.” Ice cream will be back, for sure.

Ususally, when I make my egg scrambles, I add avocado for some sort of fat. But when I made it the other day, I realized part way through that there was no avocados left (which should be a crime). So I went with another plan in order to get some sort of fat: string cheese. I cut it up and added it to the scramble so it got all melty. Tasted uhhhmazing.

I don’t even know what to say to all this. To be honest, I’m speechless. If you would have asked me a year ago, heck a couple months ago, if I would eat these foods, the answer would one big NO. But everything in my life at this point is going really well. I’m happy. I didn’t feel the need to throw up or exercise those foods that I ate and that’s saying a lot for how far I’ve come.

Am I scared for the future? Heck yes I am. I have no idea what Texas holds for me. I am going into the new school year a much different person than last year. I’m more aware of who I am as a person. I don’t feel the need to make anybody happy, but myself. And looking back, I couldn’t have said that a couple of months ago. I don’t care how many roadblocks I have to run into in order to reach that happiness, but I will do it. Some day, some how. But for now, I’m good with where I’m at.

it’s WIAW ya’ll

Guess what! I haven’t had work these past 3 days. I guess I should be a bit mad because I’m missing out on making money. But not gonna lie, it feels nice to relax! So this week’s WIAW is from home 🙂

I woke up this morning and headed straight to the gym. I basically wanted to get there before all the high schoolers/hooligans woke up. And it was perfect because I was surrounded by lots of retired people. My crew right there. I did some back/bicep work then headed to the stairs outside for some cardio. Well part way through the stairs I felt  shin splints coming on so I called it a day. This followed up…

Protein pancakes with greek yogurt, chia seeds, blueberries, and strawberries

Salad with tomatoes, avocado, and sesame ginger vinagrette, toasted Ezekial wrap dipped in avocado, and a peach

I had some glorious summer work to do so I spent a lot of the day at the kitchen table on Pinterest doing homework. The Abnormal Psych class isn’t bad but oh my goodness. I can’t stand the English class. English has always been my least favorite subject and it will forever be like that.

Protein shake: coffee, ice, almond milk, and chocolate Vega

It was good at first. But then it tasted like grass. Blah. So I only drank half.

Snack (let’s try this again)

Peach and walnuts. Much better 🙂

Use your imagination for this one: chicken, roasted carrots, and quinoa salad.

Now for some exciting news….

I’m going to a Toby Keith/Brantley Gilbery concert! I’m beyond stoked. It’s gonna be my last hurrah before heading off to Texas 🙂

Okay now onto some pins as of recently. I’m feeling a good laugh, what about you?

And on that note, I’m off to the beach!

What’s you favorite and least favorite subject?
Do you try and get to the gym before all the youngsters get there?
Who’s your favorite country artist?
