ten (?) things friday

You guys are the best. Really. Your response to yesterday’s post was amazing. I know that I can count on each and everyone one of you. Thanks again ❤

But enough of that downer stuff, let’s get back to some fun. I bring to you, five ten things Friday.

1. This song is amazing. But really. It is. The play count is slowly rising and before I know it, it is going to be the most played song on my iTunes. Taylor Swift, you’ve done it again. Even if you aren’t a Taylor Swift fan (how dare you), go listen to it now.

2. I went on my first run since the marathon. It was 4.25 miles with an 8:35 pace. My legs felt like lead the entire time. I also saw a shoe…then a sock. So I made those lead legs move a little bit faster.

3. Mangos make me swoon. I can easily eat one, two, or three in one sitting. Then my sister gets mad because there are no more left. Should have beat me to them.

4. Did I mention I love this song? Okay just making sure.

5. I cleaned today. Say wha?! You heard me. We are having people over tonight for a sort of “Christmas Round 2.” My brother and his girlfriend were in northern California for Christmas so they weren’t here to celebrate with is. So we’re doing the celebration all over again with some other family members coming over as well. But back to the cleaning. I’m not sure about you guys, but I get super tired when I clean. I mean, I can run and workout just fine. But make me vacuum and I need a nap afterwards. I also cleaned the litter box which took a good hour, when really, it should only take 15 minutes. I find any way to distract myself.

Have you ever seen the episode of Modern Family where Cam has to clean the kitchen? Yep. That’s me.

6. I got a pedicure with my mom yesterday. It was magical. I haven’t gotten one in way to long. They even got rid of my calluses. TMI? Nahh. I got my toes painted a silver color. I love it. And just might need to buy the color too. Whenever I look at it, it reminds me of Zenon Girl of the 21st century.

7. December is coming to an end. (Booo). So how did I do on this month’s goals?
-Finish reading a “fun” book: I got exactly 30 pages into the book I was reading so that is a big fat NO.
-Make homemade ravioli: Once again, no. I still want to make it though. So hopefully before break is over.
-PR in a race: The only goal I achieved this month. Holla! It was at the Walnut Creek Half with a time of 1:48:27 🙂

8. I hate hate hateeee that Sarah McLachlan commerical with the abandoned animals. Every time it comes on, my sister and I start screaming and looking for the remote to change the channel.

9. I really want to see Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. First off, I love Sandra Bullock. Second, it just seems like an amazing movie with awesome acting. Plus, it’s nominated for a bunch of awards.

10. I’m going to my grandma’s house this weekend. You don’t spend New Years partying with your grandma?? Who are you people? Just kidding. Since I’m not much into the partying scene, I have no problem visiting the fabulous grandmother this weekend. She lives alone in the mountain so she always loves when my sister and I come.

My grandma doesn’t knit so I don’t have to worry about that. Instead, we play hours and hours of Rummikub. Seriously, the best game ever.

So, since I will be at the mountains this weekend, and have zero internet or service, I am not going to post this weekend. Don’t cry. I’ll be back on Monday so stay strong until then 😉

I hope you all have a safe, fun, and memorable New Years! Enjoy yourselves and the ones you’re with.

it’s a new year

It’s that time of year again: people wanting to change something about themselves for the upcoming year. I don’t have a list of things that I want to change. There’s just one. It doesn’t have to do with running. Or school. Or saving money. It has do with bulimia.

For the past two years, I have dealt with this. There have been periods of no purging, and periods of, well, purging. Over this past summer, I never purged. Not once. I was happy with where I was at with school, basketball, weight, and family. I was even happier at the fact that I never threw up.

Then I went away to school. The first week was great. I was meeting friends and having a genuinely good time. Then basketball started. That brought in the 6am practices and 3 hour afternoon practices. My stress level sky-rocketed and purging allowed me to deal with it. That’s when the depression hit. I came home for a week and the purging didn’t get any better. Until I decided to quite basketball.

When I went back to school, it was like the first week all over again. I was so happy to not have the stress of basketball hanging over my head.

But whenever some sort of stress would come about, the bulimia would creep back into my life. Purging is a way for me to release stress. It makes me feel numb.

I don’t want to do it anymore though. I know how horrible it is for me. I know how much it hurts my family. I don’t want to break down every time something stressful comes into my life.

2012 is a new year. Bulimia will be a thing of my past, not my present. That’s all I want to change in this upcoming year. It’s not going to control me anymore.

Q&A numero uno

Well hey there errbody. I’ve had these Q&A questions for awhile so I am finally going to answer them 🙂

What would you pick for your “last meal”? (This is supposed to make you think of what your very favorite meal EVER would be!) 🙂
This question is always so hard! But I think this is what it will be:
Appetizer – Beet and Cashew Cheeze Dip from Portobello in Portland

Main Course – Gnocchi from a restaurant in Vancouver. I don’t remember the name of the place but ohhh boy. That stuff was so good.
Dessert – Unlimited frozen yogurt. (Preferably Golden Spoon

What one kitchen appliance can you not live without?
A magic bullet!! I love, love, loveee this. I can make smoothies, banana soft serve, blend flours. I have one at home and one in my dorm room…so it’s everywhere 🙂

smoothies for dayzzz

How do you get pumped up for loong training runs? I’m finding myself having trouble getting up the motivation to run 9+ miles
It’s hard to get pumped for long runs sometimes! It happens to everyone. If I plan on going on a long run, I do it in the morning. The longer I put it off, the more likely I won’t do it. So put your clothes and shoes out the night before. Then when you wake up in the morning, have a little snack (nothing big) and hit the pavement. Mornings are definitely the best time for long runs 🙂Did you like eating in a dining hall (if you did)? If so, what were some ways that you survived?! I can’t stand my school’s food haha!
Surprisingly, I actually like the dining hall food. I like having access to so many fresh veggies. I know a lot of people are not a fan of dining hall food but that’s because they aren’t creative. They have the same thing everyday or just go for the special of the day. Instead, you can do so much with the options. Make a big salad and use soup as the dressing. Make a sandwich and put hummus on it. Another thing I really like to do is make a “bowl.” Put rice, veggies, and some sort of protein on top (my fav is vegan chili).

an example of one of my salads

Do you ever get stuck in food ruts where you seem to be eating the same things all the time? How do you break them?
Heck yes I get in food ruts! I have actually had the same breakfast almost everyday for the past few days. I really don’t do anything to break them though. I just let them run their course because I figure if it tastes good, why not eat it? So after a week or so of eating a certain breakfast, I’ll naturally switch over to something new.

Since you’re in college, what are some good ideas to bring for lunch in between classes?? No way in heck am I paying for overpriced food here hahahaha
Pshhh I never pay for that overpriced stuff! If I ever need to pack a lunch, I have a bunch of options. Here are a few:
-Sandwich
-Yogurt
-Trail Mix
-Fresh Fruit
-Dried Fruit
-Steamed Veggies (I steam them so they aren’t so loud when I eat them.)
-Clif Bars, KIND Bars, Larabars, etc.

What’s your least favorite food and why?
Fish. I have never been much of a seafood fan. I used to eat shrimp every once in awhile, but never loved it. Now, any sort of seafood is gross to me. I really, really wish I liked it though because there are lots of healthy fats in it.

What food have you never eaten before but have always thought about trying? It can be something really weird or just a normal thing you’ve never tried before!
I know I just said I don’t like seafood, but I want to try sushi. Maybe like an avocado or cucumber roll. I’m hesitant to try it though because it has seaweed and that has a seafood taste to it.

Are you an early bird or rather a late riser?
Early bird for sureee! I am actually not a fan of sleeping in because I feel like my whole day is gone. I get a lot more done in the morning so I am able to spend the rest of the day relaxing and not rushing to get stuff done.

Whats your best running advice you can give me?
I’m always looking for advice too, so here are just a few things I have learned that works for me:
-Like I said, run early. Running later means you eaten more food and sometimes, certain foods don’t sit well in a runner’s stomach.
-I never run 2 days in a row unless I have a really, really good reason. I do this because I don’t want to get burned out. So 3 days a week I run. Then the other 3 days, I do some strength, hills, or stairs.
-If you are a beginner at running, don’t expect to run for miles and miles. Start small. Walk a minute, run a minute. Then slowly work your way up from there.
-Sprint! If you don’t feel like doing distance, head over to a track and do some sprint work. One that I like to do is: jog the curves, sprint the straights. I do that for 4 laps (1 mile). Then I will do abs, squats, lunges, push-ups, and then run another mile.

What are you most passionate about in life?
Nutrition. (Are you shocked?) My sister lost 100 pounds. After seeing how much it changed her life, I knew that I wanted to help people reach their goal of being happy and healthy. I also want to teach people that healthy food can be delicious.

And that’s all for today 🙂 I have more questions but I will answer them in another post. You can always leave questions in the comment section.

And now here are some things from Pinterest lately because, you know, you can never have enough pins.

I’ll be back tomorrow with my New Year’s Resolution, and a more serious post.

how to entertain a cat on WIAW

It’s t-shirt WIAW tiiiiiiime.

Anybody else stoked for Jersey Shore to start?? I am! I’m sorry. I can’t help it. I have this thing for trashy TV. There are SO many good shows coming on after the New Year.
Pretty Little Liars – January 2
Jersey Shore – January 5
The Firm (new show) – January 8
Dance Moms – January 10
Alcatraz (new show) – January 16
Real Housewives of Orange County – February 7

And what did I do today? Well I laid on the couch and watched Extreme Couponing. Stay classy people.

School is overrated. I’m just going to watch TV. I kid, I kid. It’s all about balance. School by day, trashy TV by night.

Now, onto WIAW a la Jen.

Breakfast

greek yogurt (sweetened with stevia and vanilla), erewhon mixed berry cereal, banana, pb

Yogurt messes have been my life lately. At first, when I was eating them, my sister was like, “What the heck?” But now she loves them too. Muahaha. But here’s the kicker…she doesn’t like peanut butter. She says it boring.

But as Kat pointed out, that means more for me! Double muahahaha.

After breakfast, my sister needed to run to the store, so I asked if we could go to the mall too because I needed a different size in the jacket I got. My legs don’t feel too bad today after the race. I mean, I would rather not walk, but at the same time, I am able to get around with a little whimper here and there. I feel like an old lady.

this will be me.

I went to the mall to only exchange the jacket, but I ended up buying an Under Armor shirt at Nordstroms. It was $15! I HAD to get it.

Then I got some earrings at Old Navy. $2.99 each.

Anybody else go out and get some good sale stuff? After my race yesterday, my parents and sister went to a couple of stores. They got me two pairs of Nike running shorts because they’re awesome. $10 each! Heck yeah.

My sister also got a pair of Vans for $15. I wish I had gone with them to grab some more steals, but I had a date with the couch.

Lunch

On the way home, I had $3 in my wallet, so it was like a sign to get some kombucha. It was a sign people, for sure. A store down the street from my house carries kombucha and they were literally out of every single flavor except original. So that’s what I got. I had never gotten that kind before but it was so good! Even my sister liked it. She just got a couple points after that pb hate.

GT's original kombucha + a mango

I also had a salad. I like to call this one: put-everything-in-the-fridge-and-put-it-in-a-bowl. My sister said it looked disgusting. She just lost some more points.

spinach, shredded carrots, cucumber, red onions, avocado, roasted veggies, crumbled lentil loaf, almond feta, roasted tomato basil soup

Then my sister took a picture of me. Thanks sis.

Apparently my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I only ate half.

Snack

banana and pretzel pizazz peanut butter

If you live in Oregon, or are okay with ordering peanut butter online (which I mean…who isn’t), BUY THIS PEANUT BUTTER NOW! It’s from Wild Squirrel Nut Butter and oh so amazing. Luckily, my sister lives in Portland. She’ll just have to buy me some. Lots of points for her.

I then spent a good hour entertaining my cat. This included playing snake on the computer. I wish I was kidding. I guess that’s what happens when you’re on break, sore, and your best friend has a job.

Dinner

Dinner is going to be the rest of my salad from lunch and probably a banana with peanut butter. HA who am I kidding? It WILL include a banana with peanut butter.

And now for something that is totally going to blow your mind…

My life will never be the same.

What TV shows are you loving now?
Any good eats??

Operation Jack Marathon Recap

It’s that time again. Recap time. Check out my other races on my 21 before 21 goal. This was #7 on the list: Operation Jack marathon.

Did I feel mentally ready for the race? Nope.
Did I feel physically ready for the race? Nope.
Bad runs + Being sick = a nervous Haley

I woke up at 5am superrr thirsty. Perfect. After chugging some water, I did my usual routine of getting ready and making breakfast.

udi's cinnamon raisin bagel with pumpkin butter, 2 hardboiled egg whites, clementines (i ate 2), green tea, and water

My mom, sister, and I were out of the house at 5:30. The race was in Manhattan Beach, about an hour away, and it started at 7:30. So we had plenty of time to get to the start.

This race was really small (375 runners) so parking was easy. We actually got a spot with the start in view. The part that I was most excited about was the scenery. All 26.2 miles were along the beach. Don’t mind if I do.

After sitting in the car, going to the bathroom, and freaking out a little, it was time to walk to the start.

being serious is overrated

a good luck thumbs up

I got into the crowd and listened to the directions. But I really couldn’t hear anything because the guy didn’t have a megaphone. I should buy him one.

the arrow is pointing to me...if that wasn't clear 😉

Then, we were off! The weather was uhhmazing. I was able to wear shorts and a t-shirt without shivering once.

Mile 1 – 8:10
Mile 2 – 8:02
Mile 3 – 8:07
Mile 4 – 8:10
These miles were kind of uneventful. The pathway that we were running on was pretty small so I spent most of this time finding a comfortable spot and pace.

Mile 5 – 8:19
Mile 6 – 8:32
Mile 7 – 8:27
Mile 8 – 8:38
I was SO thirsty this entire race. At the aid stations, it was like they were giving me the nectar of the gods.  Mile 9 – 8:44 – I took some Chomps at this mile. I decided that I like the normal Gu much more. The Chomps take up a lot of breaths. Cause you know, you have to chew. But with the Gu, all you have to do is swallow…that’s what she said. Tip: when you have a Gu, drink water right after.

Mile 10 – 8:44
Mile 11 – 8:56
Mile 12 – 9:15
Mile 13 – 9:05
There was also a half marathon so the marathoners got to run the whole course over again. Joy. So basically, I saw the same things, 4 times. But at least it was pretty. My mom and sis snapped some pics of me dying running by.

NECTAR OF THE GODS!

Mile 14 – 9:19
Mile 15 – 9:41
Mile 16 – 10:09
I start to really feel the pain. It didn’t help seeing the finish line and the half marathoners being done. Mid-way through mile 16, I begin to walk. I told myself that whenever I wanted to walk, I would only do it for 30 seconds. It worked out well. I only walked about 4 times until Mile 21.

Mile 17 – 10:50
Mile 18 – 10:39
Mile 19 – 11:21
Mile 20 – 12:09
Slowly, but surely, I continue to run. I am beyond stoked because I am on the last stretch…even though it’s still 6 miles. I keep on telling myself that 6 more miles and I will be done.

Mile 21 – 13:21
Mile 22 – 12:54
Mile 23 – 13:32
Mile 24 – 13:00
These were painful. I start to walk for 30 seconds, and run for a minute. I did this over and over again for 6 miles. So those miles went by beyond slow. Every time I looked at my watch, I only got about .2 miles even though it felt like a mile.

Mile 25 – 13:22
Mile 26 – 13:08
Mile .2 – 2:16
There was a water tower thingy near the finish line that I saw once I came around a corner. I was stoked to see it because I knew the end was near <–dramatic?

the arrow is pointing to my saving grace. oh and i'm making a face at my mom, which you can't see..luckily

run, Haley, run! no, really...

Total: 4:27:05   Pace: 10:11/mile

So overall, how was the race? Not great. I was in a lot more pain than I remember from last time. I know it hasn’t helped that I’ve been slacking on runs lately. But hey, I did it! And that is all that matters. I would definitely do this race again though. It’s for a great cause (autism) and it was on a beautiful course.

And best of all, the medal is the best I have ever gotten. It’s a dog tag with a list of where all the Operation Jack races take place. There is even one in Kabul, Afghanistan! Don’t worry…I won’t be doing that one.

Thank goodness the car was close because I did not feel like walking. My mom offered to go to Whole Foods but I wasn’t feeling it. Whaaa?!?! It’s true. Instead, I really wanted a smoothie. So Jamba Juice it was. I got peach perfection with whey protein. I got the medium size but they made extra and put it in the bigger size. Heck yes I was going to drink it all. I’m pretty sure it was gone in 2.5 seconds.

I also got some oatmeal with bananas and brown sugar.

It hit the spot.

On the way home, I also realized I had a dirt on my leg. But after showering, I realized that it wasn’t dirt. It’s a tan line. Because I’m cool like that.

As for the rest of the day, I have been spending it doing what I do best: laying on the couch, eating, and watching quality TV (Kourtney & Kim Take New York, The Rachel Zoe Project, Tosh.O, etc).

I am so going to be sore for awhile so the couch and TV are going to be my best friends 🙂

Race #7…DONE!

owls and peanut butter

Christmas!!! I hope your day was fun, filled with lots of good food and wonderful people. Mine was amazing. Every year, I realize just how lucky I am.

Christmas Eve is our big day. I spent the morning helping my mom in the kitchen. We always go to my grandpa’s house but it’s potluck style so we brought stuff. My mom made 2 desserts, roasted vegetables, and a kale salad. Then she told me to make some stuff too. Weee! I made a lentil loaf and sticky toffee pudding.

We got to my grandpa’s house around 5 and it was nice to see the rest of my family. Once dinner rolled around, I filled my plate with lentil loaf, roasted veggies, and kale salad. Then for dessert, I had some dark chocolate almonds and sticky toffee pudding.

Then, it was gift time. We ended getting home around 11:30. It was late! So we headed to bed…but not before I had a little panic attack.

Christmas morning was laid back…just the way I like it. We slept in till about 9 and then slowly made our way to open up the presents. Gift giving was light this year because we already got our big presents. I got my road bike and my sister got a beach cruiser. Then my parents bought each other a new car and a TV. Even though I told my parents to not get me anything, they still did.

from my parents: owl plate, owl magnets, owl hand warmers...i like owls 🙂

from my sis: pretzel pizazz peanut butter (honey peanut butter with pretzels. swoooon)

from my aunt: nike tempo shorts. from my parents: running gloves. from my sister: running shirt

And now my newest obsession, thanks to my parents…

front of the jacket

back of the jacket

Adi was in kitty heaven with all of the wrapping paper and boxes.

relaxing by the fire. because, you know, her life is so hard and all

my sister got our parents a pasta maker...adi thoroughly enjoyed something new to sit on

We also gave Lucky a new dog toy. He couldn’t have been more excited. Then after about 5 minutes, he was pooped.

After the gift giving, we headed to the kitchen for breakfast. My mom made Ellie Krieger’s whole-wheat pancakes with nutty topping.

I was in charge of the fruit salad. And heck yes there are pomegranate seeds in there. Gotta get festive.

My plate (I went back for more pancakes…of course):

As for the rest of the day, we spent it watching basketball and movies. One of them was Due Date. Because what else says Merry Christmas than Zac Galifianakis?

And now my aunt and cousin are on their way over for dinner. My mom is making roasted tomato basil soup, split pea soup, and lentil soup. Mmmm soup 🙂

I’ll probably go to bed early tonight because I have marathon #2 tomorrow. Eeeeek!!

Anywho, I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the day 🙂
